When God called Lionel Rattenbury to establish Hope Church 2508 he was at the height of his career.
He was a partner and founder of a successful law-firm, having worked for 13 years in the police force as a police prosecutor. His private law firm won the prestigious “City of Sydney’s Professional Business of the Year Award” in both 2010 and 2011. It employed 50 staff, including 28 lawyers.
He had a successful career that he loved and was financially secure.
Yet he left it all to work, with his wife Briga, for a fledgling new church.
People called them crazy but he knew the truth.
Lionel and Briga knew that everything in their lives had led to this moment. That God had been preparing them to bring His hope to 2508.
People would say that we took so many risks in doing what we did, says Lionel. But the truth was that we had complete peace about it because we knew we were exactly where God wanted us to be.
Lionel and Briga have been married for nearly 30 years and have three daughters. They aren’t quite Helensburgh ‘locals’ – having only lived here for the past 20 years!
Briga is a Chaplain with Chaplaincy Australia and as Regional Chaplain she oversees chaplains across the south coast. She holds a specialised ministry certificate in pastoral care and has a keen interest in assisting people in emergency and disaster response.
Lionel has a Diploma of Ministry and is currently studying a Masters of Theology.
